CHALLENGES FACING INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT

nformation technology (IT) faces a number of implementation challenges —
in part, generated by its success. Some challenges are addressed as follows:

How to deal with rising expectations of management for benefits
from technology.
Similar to the classic “child in a candy store,” once people realize benefits
from technology they want more. Listening to vendor marketing pitches
and advertising, it seems as simple as picking up the telephone. Obviously,
it is not. So what should you do? You will be including the change of the
business process within their expectations. You will find that this will shift
considerable management attention away from the technology and toward
the business process.

How to successfully involve business unit staff in implementation work.
Business people have to be motivated to become involved and stay involved
on their own. If you force them into implementation, it will not be effective.
Therefore, you will be provided with guidelines for getting and keeping
people involved in useful work.

How to implement new technology with changed processes on
a timely basis.
You can benefit from guidelines not only for what to do, but also for what
not to do. What are some of the steps that you could delete? As you will
see, this is a series of trade-offs. For example, how much and what docu-
mentation should be produced is a trade-off between benefit and effort. It is
similar for other activities.
