HOW TO BUILD YOUR FIRST PROCESS PLAN

Start with a process that crosses two departments. Also, make sure that the
process is not politically active or embroiled in disputes. The key search terms
are “mundane” and “medium size”. The first time out is a learning experience.
You will have to do much of the work yourself because most people require a
trigger or model to demonstrate what they are after. This means that you should
develop a model, scenario, or “straw man” of the process plan and strategy.
These trigger reactions from people and get them involved. Do not just sit there
and ask them what they think. Many people are so involved in their daily work
that they have not had time to consider changes or improvement to any extent.
However, they can react.
After you collect information and build your first “straw-man” plan, seek
reaction. Show people how their input changes the plan. Get them involved in
defining benefits and issues. Make sure that you maintain almost continu-
ous contact.
