TRENDS IN KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT

Knowledge management was once viewed as consisting of data warehousing
and data marts, exclusively. The idea was that you gathered data into a
warehouse and then used fairly exotic software tools perform data mining. The
concept was that this would help to give you a competitive edge. For some firms,
this has worked successfully; for others, it has been a disaster. No one used the
data in some firms and the data were not valid or useful in others. Today, knowl-
edge management is wider in scope. It encompasses gathering lessons learned
and making this information available to others. It also means gathering
information on how to do work in a business process more effectively and
getting employees to use the experience across time and space.
Knowledge management represents a unique area separate from software
development and software packages that target operational applications.
Knowledge management software tends to have an impact on the more strategic
processes of an organization as opposed to standard software
